GREENSBORO (August 11, 2026) – Breastfeeding families can now donate supplies of human milk to GenerationEd.
The Greensboro-based nonprofit has partnered with WakeMed Milk Bank to serve as a designated drop-off location, expanding human donor milk access to families across North Carolina and parts of the East Coast. Baby Café USA, a nonprofit organization that specializes in lactation support and education, helped coordinate the initiative.
GenerationEd is one of WakeMed’s 11 drop-off sites, and its only site in Guilford County. The agency accepts and stores frozen donor milk, which is later taken to a lab for testing before being pooled with other donations, pasteurized, and distributed to hospitals and families for use.
The greatest need for breast milk in North Carolina is in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), which, according to WakeMed, see more than 10,000 premature births every year. By expanding access to human milk through organizations like GenerationEd, vulnerable infants can receive the lifesaving support breast milk provides — vitamins, nutrients, and antibodies that aid in healthy growth and development.
“This partnership is about so much more than just being a drop-off location,” said Maria Layne-Stevens, chief executive officer at GenerationEd. “It’s about being part of a solution that meets a very critical need for families across our state. And the fact that it aligns with the work that our Nurse-Family Partnership program has already been doing to improve infant and maternal health outcomes makes it that much more meaningful.”
More than 700 ounces of milk have been delivered to GenerationEd since June. Donations are accepted from approved donors on Tuesdays by appointment only, between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at 1200 Arlington Street. Free on-site lactation support is also available on Tuesdays beginning at 10:30 a.m.
